We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

Marian Wright Edelman

I’ve decided to start each post off with the quote I put on each door that day. Maybe it will be inspiring to you at home…

Today we kicked off the Glen Fork Soccer camp. We were very excited to have a great turnout (16 kids!!!) and a wonderful group of PVs for the first day. Many returning campers returned to improve their skills, while several new kids joined in. After soccer camp, the group of PVs made a run of donations to the Itmann Food Bank in preparation for Friday distribution.

Home repair projects are continuing as usual. Two sites from last week carried over and we started a new site out in Long Branch. We are getting close to finishing a couple of more sites!!!

Getting ready for a scrumptious dinner of homemade pizza!!!!

Sundays are traditionally Community Day in the PV world. This week we had a full day together, starting out with the group attending services at New Life Church in Jesse. This church is very active in the community with a lot of social outreach happening. They have collaborated with St. Vincent DePaul and the Itmann Food Bank in the past and they are very interested in wanting to collaborate with us as much as possible. We met with them a few weeks back and besides talking about collaborating with work, they extended an invitation for us to join them for their services. Holy Cross did not have services this Sunday due to Fr. Jack being out of town, so this seemed like a perfect opportunity. We felt very welcomed and a part of the community.

After grabbing a quick bite to eat back at the school, we loaded into the cars and headed up to Twin Falls for a hike to the falls. The walk afforded lots of time for good conversation and lots of laughs. The fall were quite impressive this trip, lots of water pouring through due to heavy rains over the weekend. After we finished the hike some of the group went swimming up at the lodge while others headed back to the school.

We were treated with a departure from our regular Sunday meal when a couple of volunteers asked if they could cook dinner. It was a very tasty meal of kabobs and veggie soup, amazingly enough all done on the grill!

After a quick reorientation for the PVs who arrived over the weekend, we gathered together for the commissioning service, to officially welcomed and prepare the newly arrived for service. Sundays are usually a very full, but relaxing day. We are now ready for the upcoming work week!

Pictures from Week 3 (7/4-7/11)

A PV reads with a participant of the tutoring program for kids from Glen Fork Grade School

The PV jobsite board from Friday

An impromptu coffee house sing along one night in the community room. We had one talented musical group this week!

Celebrating a birthday with one of the tutoring students. The PVs were very creative in having the kids make the pudding and working on their fractions at the same time!

Week 3’s group shot…look at all those smiling faces!

For Friday evening’s reflection we all headed outside for a reflection on our sense experiences from the day

PVs hard at work organizing St.Vincent DePaul, an ongoing job all throughout the summer. One PV said it was a “extreme makeover edition” of the warehouse.

This site had many different jobs going on at the same time, with the family working right alongside the PVs

A PV and friend share stories while painting a door.

Two of our smaller PVs became experts at stapling insulation under a newly built addition

There was a lot of game playing this week….dominoes anyone?

Banana-grams has been very popular all summer. PVs have quite an impressive vocabulary!

Keeping up with tradition, this talented home repair crew sung their report back to the group during jobsites. There must be video of this somewhere….anyone, anyone???

Two of our favorite PV meal preparers making homemade manicotti. We really suffer down here with bad food :o)

We kicked off the week with our traditional, non-competitive kickball game. Of course it ended in a tie!

Well, last nights dinner of Mac and Cheese, topped of with scrumptious dessert was quite tasty. After we headed outside for a beautiful reflection on our senses. We had been asked to pay special attention yesterday to what we saw, heard, smelled, tasted and touched. It really made us all aware of everything going on around us.

Being a Friday night, we gathered in the gym for the traditional weekly group picture. (Thanks Bruce for helping me out with all the pictures!). Another tradition with the younger pvs also occurred with many pulling an all-nighter.

This morning saw the departure of 7 PVs heading to Florida and New Jersey…always a sad time to say goodbye.

This being a free day for volunteers, there isn’t much to tell. I could tell you that many took advantage of catching up on some much needed sleep, others heading in to Beckley for a Gabes run and to watch a movie.

We are awaiting the arrival of 10 PVs this evening, so our community will be pretty much the same size this week as last. I will try and post a few pictures later tonight that highlight the past weeks activities.

Thanks all who are following and commenting on the blog. We are glad to have everyone along for the journey!!!!

Peace
