“Love is a force… It is not a result, it is a cause. It is not a product; it produces. It is a power, like money, or team, or electricity. It is valueless unless you can give something else by means of it.”
Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Another busy day around PVland today. A lot of hard work and a lot of sweat is happening her in Wyoming County.  Today was the second day of the Pineville Basketball Camp and we were thrilled that more kids came today to play basketball and learn new skills. We also decided to combine our craft camp with the basketball camp in Pineville and that combo seems to be a great success. Those that don’t really want to play basketball can have some fun of their own!

We were also spread throughout the county with our five home repair sites. The site furthest from the school is in Corrine. Volunteers continued to work on the ramp and make the modifications in the house for the wheelchair bound resident.

A little bit closer to the school in Brenton, we started a new site where the volunteers worked to fix several weak spots in the floor. Progress was made and we look forward to fixing a few more tomorrow and then to begin tiling.

On the Welch-Pineville road we continued tiling for the lady whose house we worked on last week. We are on the way down the hallway and are almost finished! Volunteers also finished laying the grass seed over the newly covered water line. What was most amazing was that where the grass seed was laid last week, grass is already growing!

Heading back over from Welch Pineville road on Indian Creek, PVs began a new project of what seems to be our specialty this summer, ramps. This ramp is being built for a lady who suffered a stroke and lost most mobility on one side of her body. Her son who lives with her has had to carry her down the stairs to the car. Now, he will be able to wheel her down to the car.

The last site, closest to the school, is in Baileysville. This is a rather large site with a lot of different projects taking place. Today we finished laying the deckboards and started building the frame for the roof. Also the platform frame was built for the beginnings of yet another ramp. (We should know what we are doing with these now, right?) There was also another team working near the back door building a small platform and stairs to give the resident an alternative way out of the trailer. Lots of work done, lots of work still to do.

After the busy day we were all ready for some wonderful food, and wonderful food we were given. We got to feast on homemade calzones, baked ziti, eggplant and ceasar salad.  Needless to say we were all full and happy when we were done : )  And that wasn’t it, we also were treated to banana chocolate chip bread, which was also delicious. We are getting a little spoiled here….

Reflection tonight was a look back to when we felt that that the PVs were truly apart of who we are. The stories and moments shared were very powerful.

“The greatest challenge of the day is: how to bring about a revolution of the heart, a revolution which has to start with each one of us.”
Dorothy Day

Today was the beginning of a very busy week for the PVs. We had eight sites going on today, with a lot of action. Today was the first day of our camps for this summer. We have a craft camp and basketball camp with two sessions. The craft camp is being held in Mullens, while the basketball camp is in Pineville. When we stopped by basketball camp the children were having a lot of funny, and learning a lot.

Besides the camp, we had six home repair sites going on, two new and four continuing. Of the four continuing, we finish up at the painting site outside of Welch that we begun work on last week. We were also able to finish up the underpinning site in Hanover, and the ramp site in Oceana.

The two new sites that started came along nicely. We started a ramp in Corrine for a disabled lady in a wheelchair. Besides the ramp, there were several jobs inside that needed to be done to help make her life a little easier. We were able to widen her bathroom door so she could easily get in and out of her bathroom, make her air conditioning units fit better in her windows, and we built up a cabinet and replaced a counter top.

The other new site was for a couple who live in Bailyesville. There are several projects that we will be working on there throughout the week, but today we tore down an old porch and porch roof and started building a new one. The gentleman that lives in the house is in a rehabilitation center and can’t come home until his house is safer, and there is a ramp to help get him in and out of the house.

After an extremely busy day, everyone was more than ready for dinner. We were treated to a Mexican casserole, black beans, rice and salad. A very yummy dinner.

Reflection for the evening included a musical number and props! We looked at the idea of preflection, looking at the week ahead. We were then asked to share a new and a good from the day. This sharing is even more interesting with so many sites. One really gets to hear what went on everywhere in the county.

Yesterday saw several PVs head home and literally dozens arrive. We have the biggest week of the summer this week, and perhaps the biggest week in the history of the PVs. There will be 48 PVs scattered throughout Wyoming County this week, putting their talents to good use.

Since we have such a large group, we felt it was important to do some icebreakers and name games, so we stayed at the school which turned out to be a great decision as it turned out to be quite a rainy day. We handed over the reigns to some of our college age volunteers to lead the community day fun, and we were not disappointed. We had a lot of fun and learned a bit about each person.

The evening found us cooking out again, orientating and reorientation ourselves, and finally winding down the evening with the PV Commissioning Service, welcoming in the newly arrived and preparing ourselves for the week ahead.

Please keep the PVs in your thoughts and prayers this week for a safe and fruitful week.’
