“In the struggle for justice, the only reward is the opportunity to be in the struggle. You can’t expect that you’re going to have it tomorrow. You just have to keep working on it.”
Frederick Douglas
It’s Friday today, the day the PVs focus in on helping different agencies throughout the county unrelated to home repair. There were many options for volunteers to choose from, including organizing at the Itmann Food Bank ahead of next week’s distribution, distributing furniture at the St. Vincent de Paul warehouse, assisting UGWA with a stream cleanup and knot weed removal, playing banana bingo at Glen Rogers manor, and finishing up at the craft and basketball camps in Pineville. We also had a couple of crews of PVs that helped hang fliers and promote the next basketball camp and another group collected and delivered tools that we will be lending to the Boy Scouts who are coming into the area. A busy day once again, but a wonderful and fulfilling day.
We wrapped up the day with a delicious dinner. Spaghetti, stir fry, salad and the topper, homemade rolls from Daphne. What another delicious week of food we were treated to!
Being that it is Friday, for reflection we looked back on our week as PVs and shared a special moment that solidified why we were here this week, this summer.

“What I must do, is all that concerns me, not what the people think… It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of a crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Another buys day for the PVs! We were able to finish up our ramp project in Indian Creek, the work we were doing in Lilydale (beaver and all), and our Ramp in Corrine. We also continued work at the flooring site in Brenton and the site in Baileysville. Both those sites will be carrying over into next week, as will a new site we started in Baileysville as well. At this home, we began powerwashing the home and reinforce an existing porch. We will be coming back to finish the porch and powerwashing.
Today was also the second to last day of the camps. The kids seem to be having a lot of fun, and I think the volunteers are enjoying it as well.
Dinner tonight was a delicious casserole of chicken, garlic, cheese and noodles, with variations for the vegetarians and the youngins in the group. It was delicious and satisfying. We also had a fabulous dessert of a brownie, ice cream, m&m concoction that was scrumptious.
The evening’s reflection focused on sharing something we received or learned while we are here and how we would like to take the new knowledge with us when we return home. The sharing was inspiring.
After reflection we were treated to an entertaining talent show put on by the PVs kids. The gifts and talents keep showing up in unexpected places…

“Direct action is not a substitute for work in the courts and the halls of government…indeed, direct action and legal action complement one another; when skillfully employed, each becomes more effective.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today was another busy day, so busy that our blog post is a little later than usual. PVs were once again spread throughout the county at eight different sites. We continued and made great progress at the two ramp sites, the flooring site in Brenton, and the multifaceted site in Baileysville. We also finished the flooring/tiling site on Welch Pineville Road. The home owner was thrilled with all the work that was done there, and she told us she can’t wait to show her daughter.
We also started a new, old site for our friends in Lilydale. Volunteers helped with a few odds and ends in the two trailers, including getting their AC working again. But perhaps the biggest job completed was the time the PVs spent with the family. As always it is a wonderful treat to just be in their presence.
The two non-home repair sites for the day included the basketball and craft camps in Pineville where the kids had a wonderful time, and a group of PVs went to Mullens to work at the Itmann Food Bank sorting through donations and getting it ready for distribution next week. All and all,it was a wonderful day on the job sites.
Breakfast was on the menu for dinner tonight. We had pancakes, eggs (with and without cheese), taylor ham (a NJ specialty), veggie sausage and home fries. It was a delicious meal. The dessert came after reflection, but it was worth the wait, yogurt parfait. Pretty fancy for this joint. : )
During reflection we were treated to a beautiful duet from two volunteers followed by the group sharing their thoughts on what they feel they have given this week.
After hearing the beautiful music created by PVs all week, we decided to have a coffee house like evening where volunteers could share their talents and their tunes with the rest of the group. We are really bowled over by how musically talented many of the PVs are.
