“It is not possible to live for everyone else but it is possible to include everyone else in decisions.”  Bryon Pulsifer

Reflection last night had us focus on what it is about the PVs and the West Virginia experience that we would like to be able to take with us and recreate at home.  We went around the circle and shared our thoughts.

The weather finally broke for us today, so it was a little cooler and a little wetter.   The morning started of with our weekly “chores” as folks are calling it.  Friday is the day we all chip in and clean the school top to bottom.  Boy is it shiny and clean smelling!

Today was also our non-home repair day, so we had a lot of different activities going on throughout the county. We had our weekly home repair class at St. Vincent DePaul, we continued with tutoring, we helped UGWA with a trash cleanup project, we sent our first crew to the “new” Glen Rogers Manor, there were a couple of runs to the house in Pineville to pick up supplies for next week’s projects and there were visits to old friends.  All in all it was busy, yet relaxing day.

Tonight’s dinner is a scrumptious meal of adobo chicken and fried rice.  Yummy, yummy.

“It is possible to give without loving, but it is impossible to love without giving.”  John Wesley

Last night for reflection we were asked to think about loss and renewal.  We reflected on people and situations that represented loss and renewal to us while make a paper flower.  As we each shared we added our flower to a vase that now decorates the community room.

Hopefully today proves to be the last hot day for awhile as it is predicted by forecasters.  We finished up with the set of steps up in Lilydale, made great progress at the two homes up on Hanover, had a roving garbage crew picking up trash at a couple of places we were working and delivering it to the dump on top of a mountain, and a crew power washing at Holy Cross Church in Pineville.  I honestly think the power washers had the best job in this heat, it was hard work, but it was refreshing AND they worked across the street from Dairy Queen.  Does it get any better?

We are getting ready to gather for supper.  Tonight’s menu is black bean casserole, can’t wait to eat!

“Empathy is the most radical of human emotions.”  Gloria Steinem

Last night we were asked to reflect on friendship and in particular the friendships that while we are PVs, both in the PV community and the local community.  After everyone shared it was evident that a very special bond is formed as PVs, a bond that lasts far beyond our time of service.

Today was another hot day in Wyoming County.  The temperatures officially reached 96, but at both of our home repair sites (the same two from yesterday) it had to be pushing 100 degrees.  Since it was so hot and it has been all week, we decided to have everyone call it a day at 1:00pm as the temperatures climbed.

We also had tutoring today and continue to have a great group of kids (and volunteers!).  This week’s theme is focused on the month of July and parties.  It seems that there are several July birthdays among the tutorees and tutorers.

Tonight we are being treated to a South American feast of empenadas and couscous.  Couscous is yum yum.

“If the earth does grow inhospitable toward human presence, it is primarily because we have lost our sense of courtesy toward the earth and its inhabitants.”  Thomas Berry

Reflection last night focused on our theme of fellowship and we shared our day’s “news and goods.”

Today was a scorcher, with highs officially hitting 96 degrees although the bank in Pineville read 100 degrees.  We continued our work out in Hanover.  Midday volunteers took a break and had a little gospel sing with the other group working and the residents.  We also started work at our friends in Lilydale.  It was hot grueling work moving rocks, mowing, weed eating and building steps.  Volunteers were in the direct sun in a valley with little escape from the heat.  Unfortunately, tomorrows weather doesn’t look any better, if anything a little hotter.

The day was made a little more tolerable knowing that we would be feasting on a scrumptious Italian meal tonight.
