Our hope for each of you as you head into the New Year… HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
“To provide dignity, care and compassion through action, with the example that each person can make a difference. To educate and advocate acceptance and understanding of each other’s differences. To ultimately bring about the realization that we are all a vital part of this world and with extended effort put an end to homelessness, hunger and hatred.”
Operation Sack Lunch’s (OSL) Mission Statement
Yesterday, 10 Seattle area PVs took the time out of their busy lives to help prepare and serve a meal with OSL. The PVs have been collaborating with OSL for more than 4 years during the PV Service Week in the spring, but now also right before Christmas for the past 3 years. The adult volunteers worked in the kitchen preparing a meal that we would serve outside at the Outdoor Meal Site to 200 people, but also to several shelters and other programs in the area. In all, OSL prepares as serves 1,400 meals a day out of that kitchen and more than 2,400 total meals throughout the city. Not only is the shear number of meals they provide impressive, but how they do it is pretty amazing too. They have rescued more than 1.2 million pounds of food this year from grocery stores and restaurants in Seattle. This is food that would have otherwise been thrown in the trash. Providing warm meals to those that are food insecure seems like such a better way to use this food!
Today the volunteers prepared and served Salmon Chowder, corn on the cob and grapefruit. Our two younger volunteers spent their time putting together bags of sunflower seeds to hand out as snacks to go along with their meal. The Outdoor Meal Site where we served the meal is a collaboration between OSL and the City of Seattle. The city provides the space to have the site and OSL serves three meals a day, 365 days a year at this site, no questions asked. Anyone can come and have a meal. This model is unique and Seattle is the only place in the country to have a program like it. OSL is a pretty impressive organization and encourage you to read more about it, and maybe even come volunteer with the PVs there in the spring!
Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world. All things break. And all things can be mended. Not with time, as they say, but with intention. So go. Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally. The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.
Compassion isn’t just about feeling the pain of others; it’s about bringing them in toward yourself. If we love what God loves, then, in compassion margins get erased. ‘Be compassionate as God is compassionate,’ means the dismantling of barriers that exclude.
